Ogun steps up prep for National Intermediate Games

Ogun State has ramped up preparations for the National Intermediate Games taking place in Lagos from October 1 to 15, according to PUNCH Sports Extra. The Boxing Association of Ogun concluded its 16th edition of the Wale Edun Boxing Hall of Fame, which took place at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, the state capital. The competition, sponsored by former Finance Minister Wale Edun, saw several local boxers showcase their skills and potentially prepare for the national event.

One notable fight was between Adedokun Basit and Oladele Waris in the 47kg class, where Basit won by a split decision of 3-2. Female boxer Ganiyat Lawal emerged victorious over Oyinkansola Odesanya in the 54kg category, while Roqibat Alayande beat Khadijat Hassan in the 47kg division. Other victories were secured by Sukurat Taiwo, Adewale Idris, and Abdul-Salam Fatiu in their respective weight classes.

The competition served as a crucial step in the development of young boxers aged 15 to 19, as part of the state's efforts to nurture talent ahead of the maiden National Intermediate Games. The event was attended by Acting Director of Sports Seyi Sonde, officials from the State Sports Council, and other stakeholders. The National Sports Commission introduced the National Intermediate Games to facilitate the transition from grassroots to elite sports for emerging athletes.

Lagos State, the hosts of the inaugural edition, are also in the midst of preparations, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently inspecting facilities at the Teslim Balogun Stadium. Rehabilitation work is ongoing at the stadium, with completion expected by September.
