Esiovwa-Thompson opens up on England for Nigeria switch

Seventeen-year-old Nigerian fencer Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson made history on Sunday, becoming the first Nigerian to win gold at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships. The teenager achieved this milestone by successfully defending the men’s U-23 epee title at Rugby School Nigeria, defeating three Indian opponents along the way. Esiovwa-Thompson's grandparents were among the enthusiastic spectators cheering him on during the historic victory.

The teenager's decision to represent Nigeria over England was driven by a desire to fulfill his Olympic dream. Despite growing up in England and having previously represented the English team, Esiovwa-Thompson expressed his longing to fence for Nigeria, stating that it was the right path for him.
