English Football League ‘concerned and disappointed’ at PFA legal challenge

The English Football League (EFL) has expressed concern and disappointment following the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) legal challenge against new cost control measures for clubs in League One. The PFA opposes the Squad Cost Management Protocol, fearing it could negatively impact players' earning potential, despite previously opposing a similar rule change in 2021 on the grounds that it effectively imposed a salary cap.

EFL chief executive Trevor Birch emphasized that financial sustainability and player protection are interdependent, stating that stable clubs are better positioned to honor contracts, pay wages on time, invest in facilities, and provide long-term opportunities for players. He noted that delayed reform poses a risk as rising losses and increased reliance on owner funding heighten risks for everyone.

The EFL cites the growing financial woes of League One clubs, with losses tripling over the past five years and owner funding surpassing treble figures since 2021-22. Birch highlighted the need for rules tailored to the distinct financial landscape of League One and League Two clubs, emphasizing that these reforms aim to help clubs operate responsibly and sustainably while considering the communities they serve.

The EFL is currently evaluating a financial redistribution proposal from the Premier League, with the new football regulator prepared to intervene and impose a solution if no agreement can be reached.
