Chinese paratrooper killed in Qinghai exercise as Beijing acknowledges casualties

Beijing has acknowledged that a 23-year-old Chinese paratrooper named Xia Shiyuan died during a training exercise in Qinghai province on May 27. According to state media, Xia fell from an airborne aircraft and later died at a hospital on the same day. Xia, who joined the People's Liberation Army in 2021, was given the posthumous title of martyr and a third-class merit citation by Huaiyuan county authorities.

His remains were returned to his hometown on August 8 and he was laid to rest at the Huaiyuan Martyrs' Cemetery on Monday, receiving full military honors.

The PLA has not disclosed the cause of Xia's death, but it is the latest in a series of military accidents and fatalities made public by the Chinese armed forces. In June, two more paratroopers lost their lives during training exercises, including a high-ranking officer named Wang Rui, who saved a fellow soldier during a separate parachute training incident on May 28. Wang was also awarded a third-class merit citation for his heroic actions.

These recent incidents have sparked a debate about the safety measures in place during military training and the government's transparency in acknowledging such tragedies. As China continues to modernize its armed forces and push for new tactics and equipment, the public has called for more openness in reporting military accidents to ensure the well-being of its troops.
