Cachalia orders Anti-Gang Unit reinforcement after Reiger Park deaths

On Friday night, two South African police officers were killed, along with two women, in Reiger Park, East Rand. Constables Thapelo Tlomatsane, 27, and Sphiwe Sibeko, 28, were among the victims. The incident prompted Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to reinforce the South Africa Police Service’s Anti-Gang Unit, following the tragic event.

During a press conference on Sunday, Cachalia visited the families of the slain officers, expressing his condolences and emphasizing the difficult situation the families were facing. The two officers joined the police service about two years prior. Cachalia, during his speech, highlighted the importance of community understanding of the challenges faced by police officers, stating that "there is no other career which people have to put their lives on the line."

Following the visit, Cachalia announced that the Anti-Gang Unit would be strengthened in response to the high levels of gang violence in the community. This decision came in light of the recent deaths of two officers, which were taken in for questioning. Additionally, two firearms belonging to the deceased officers were recovered during the investigation.
