Britain completes double as Romell Glave wins gold in European 100m final

Great Britain secured a sprint double at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, with Romell Glave winning the men's 100m gold medal on Tuesday evening. A day prior, Amy Hunt claimed the women's title. Glave led a British one-two finish, with Jeremiah Azu taking silver. Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs pulled up midway through the final.

Glave attributed his victory to improvements in his start, stating it was an amazing feeling to execute his race. He also noted that upgrading from a bronze medal in 2024 to gold was particularly significant. Azu, who finished on the podium after an inconsistent season, expressed satisfaction with his performance, seeing it as his best in the final.

Both British sprinters believed Great Britain targeted a clean sweep of medals but were pleased with the one-two finish. The dominance of the British sprinters, coupled with Jacobs' struggles, was highlighted by former Olympic and world long jump champion Greg Rutherford and British 400m runner Allison Curbishley. Asha Philip praised the British pair for their composure and ability to handle the pressure of competing in front of the home crowd.

This result gave Great Britain gold medals in both individual 100m events, helping them move to the top of the medal table after two days of competition.
