Britain completes double as Romell Glave wins gold in European 100m final

Britain clinched a sprint double at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, as Romell Glave claimed the men's 100m gold medal, following in the footsteps of Amy Hunt's victory in the women's race on the previous day. Glave led a British one-two finish at Alexander Stadium, with Jeremiah Azu securing silver behind him, as Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs faltered midway through the final.

Hunt had won the women's 100m gold in 11.00 seconds earlier that day. Glave attributed his triumph to honing his start, stating, "It is an amazing feeling. Just the work I put in to come here and execute my race." He also noted the significance of upgrading from a bronze medal from the 2024 championships to gold. Britain had aimed for a clean sweep of the medals but was content with the one-two finish.

Azu expressed satisfaction with his podium finish after a challenging season, noting that races in the 100m were often inconsistent. He believed he delivered his best performance in the final, stating, "I want to put in my best performance in the final and I felt like I did that today." Former British 400m runner Allison Curbishley praised Azu's powerful start, calling it a "phenomenal explosion out of the blocks."

Olympic 4x100m relay medallist Asha Philip also commended the British sprinters for maintaining composure under pressure, highlighting Glave's remarkable focus and control throughout the race.
