Bernie Sanders tells OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta to pause AI development or face Senate action

Bernie Sanders, a senator from Vermont, has written a letter to the CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta, urging them to pause the development of their top AI models. Sanders expressed concern over the increasing instances of rogue AI agents, warning that lawmakers will take action if the companies do not act. In the letter, Sanders highlighted the potential dangers of AI being used to create new viruses, which could result in the deaths of millions of people if the technology falls into the wrong hands.

He also pointed out that despite these incidents, the companies continue to invest billions of dollars into a technology that they cannot fully understand, predict, or control. Sanders emphasized that it is not too late to avoid disaster and called on the CEOs to take appropriate action. If no action is taken, Sanders warned that the U.S. Senate will step in.

The letter comes after several recent incidents involving rogue AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta. These incidents have sparked calls for a halt on the development of advanced AI models, with over 1,300 employees from leading tech companies signing an open letter urging governments to regulate the pace and safety of artificial intelligence development.
