Barminski returns to Hong Kong with a cardboard airport taken over by aliens

American artist Barminski has returned to Hong Kong with a whimsical installation titled Runway 51. This full-scale airport terminal is entirely crafted from cardboard, adorned with heavy black lines and vibrant colors. The exhibition builds upon Barminski's 2023 Hong Kong show, which featured a fake toy shop concealing a staged moon landing conspiracy, by transforming everyday airport routines into an absurd and amusing experience.

Visitors begin at a cardboard security checkpoint, where a cardboard alien officer oversees the inspection of items from Barminski's upcoming Casetify travel collection. The terminal then unfolds into a departure lounge and airport shop, complete with hand-painted flight boards, cardboard seating, and miniature pop culture figures such as Darth Vader, Agent J, and Ripley, all sealed within collectible souvenirs.

The restroom adds a peculiar twist, with mirrors above the cardboard sinks replacing visitors' reflections with views of deep space. A hidden door leads to a surveillance chamber filled with control panels and flickering monitors, challenging viewers to ponder their place in the universe.

The exhibition also delves into complex narratives through video works, exploring alternate realities, historical fragments, and the possibility that extraterrestrial beings have been shaping human civilization for centuries. Runway 51 blurs the line between sci-fi parody and tongue-in-cheek conspiracy theory, suggesting that these cosmic visitors may have been closer than we think.

Barminski's installation is on display at JPS Gallery from now until September 19, free of charge, with hours from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
