Bagre Dam spillage: NADMO secures temporary shelters for potential flood victims

In the Upper East Region of Ghana, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has established temporary shelters to accommodate residents potentially impacted by a flood caused by the anticipated spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso. Rebecca Akolgo, the Upper East Regional Director of NADMO, announced these measures during an interview on JoyNews' The Pulse on August 11.

She and her team are working diligently with local stakeholders to fortify flood defences and mitigate the damage that could be caused by flooding.

To prepare for the possible disaster, NADMO has secured temporary structures in vulnerable areas. Akolgo emphasized the importance of these structures, saying they will provide safe havens for those who may be forced to evacuate their homes due to flooding. The organisation is also conducting community outreach and education, specifically targeting farmers and residents living along the White Volta.

These efforts aim to inform the public about the risks of flooding and instruct them on how to stay safe by moving to higher ground as soon as the dam begins to release water.

Additionally, NADMO has received updates from Sonabel, the agency responsible for managing the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso. According to these updates, the current water level at the dam stands at 233.08, and it is anticipated that the dam will spill when the level reaches 234. NADMO officials are closely monitoring the dam's water level as it approaches the predetermined spillage threshold.

Their monitoring efforts are part of a broader coordination between NADMO and other agencies to enhance preparedness and facilitate a swift response to any flooding that occurs.

Akolgo also urged residents in flood-prone regions, particularly those along the White Volta, to take the situation seriously. She stressed the importance of heeding evacuation orders and moving to safer locations should the need arise. This call to action underscores NADMO's commitment to safeguarding the community and ensuring the well-being of its citizens during this potentially perilous time.
