Australia, Vietnam boost military ties in nod to China

Australia and Vietnam announced on Tuesday plans to strengthen their military cooperation as both nations contend with China's expanding influence in the Pacific and the South China Sea. During a meeting between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Vietnamese leader To Lam in Canberra, the two countries pledged to work more closely on maritime security and joint military training.

Albanese emphasized the importance of friendship, stating, "Our defence industries, as well as our defence forces, are cooperating more and more." The Vietnamese leader's visit to Australia comes amid concerns over China's growing military presence in the region. Vietnam has competing territorial claims in the South China Sea, a claim Beijing asserts has no legal foundation despite an international ruling.

Australia is also bolstering its defense forces and welcoming a larger US military presence to counter China's expansion. The increased military collaboration between Australia and Vietnam is intended to directly contribute to regional stability and security. The development of the partnership was accompanied by other agreements between Australia and Vietnam, such as a commitment to enhance economic resilience and resume market access for Australian game meat, including kangaroo, in Vietnam.
