Can Vietnam economy harness diaspora in Australia, New Zealand?

Sydney: Australia and Vietnam announced plans to strengthen their military ties on Tuesday, amid growing concerns over China's expanding influence in the Pacific and the South China Sea. The bilateral meeting between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Vietnamese leader To Lam took place at Parliament House in Canberra.

During the meeting, Albanese highlighted the increasing cooperation between their defence forces on maritime security and joint training exercises. He emphasized that in today's uncertain world, it is crucial for allies to engage with each other on various levels, including economic, social, and environmental aspects, to tackle the challenges ahead.

Vietnam's visit to Australia coincides with both nations' frustrations with China's military expansion in the region. Vietnam, one of several countries with territorial claims in the South China Sea, disputes Beijing's claims despite an international ruling that its assertions lack legal standing.

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles stated that the enhanced cooperation with Vietnam would significantly contribute to regional stability and security. This announcement accompanied several other agreements between Australia and Vietnam, such as strengthening economic resilience and resuming Australian game meat exports, including kangaroo, to Hanoi.
