AG blocks Wontumi’s bail bid, says he is a flight risk

The Attorney General has rejected a bail application by Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing concerns that he may flee the country while his appeal is ongoing. Antwi-Boasiako filed the affidavit on August 11, opposing his own bail application pending the outcome of his appeal against his conviction and sentence.

His legal team requested bail from the High Court on August 7 as they contest his conviction and sentence through the appeals process. However, the State vehemently opposes the bail application, arguing that the grounds of appeal do not suggest a reasonable chance of success. The Attorney General's Office asserts that Wontumi's appeal claims lack merit, and their primary concern is that he may pose a flight risk.

They express uncertainty about whether Wontumi will remain within Ghana during the appeal proceedings. Additionally, the State challenges several claims made by Wontumi in his application, including those supporting his bail request. The court will assess arguments from both parties before deciding whether to grant bail to Wontumi pending the appeal.
