AG blocks Wontumi’s bail bid, says he is a flight risk

The Attorney General has denied a bail request from Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), stating he may abscond while his appeal is pending. In an affidavit filed on August 11, the Attorney General opposed Wontumi's application for bail while he appeals his conviction and sentence.

Wontumi's lawyers sought bail for their client on August 7, as he contended his appeal against his conviction and sentence. However, the State vehemently opposed the application, asserting the grounds of appeal lack any reasonable chance of success. The Attorney General's Office argued that the claims in Wontumi's appeal were unsound, and their main concern is that Wontumi is a flight risk, as they are uncertain if he would remain in the country throughout the appeal process.

The State also contested several claims made by Wontumi in his affidavit to support his bail application. The court will weigh arguments from both sides before deciding whether to grant bail to Wontumi while his appeal is pending.
