What we know about the death of Tasia Fortune in Mississippi

The hanging death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black woman, has left her family and community in Mississippi shaken. Her body was discovered outside an abandoned house, and police have not yet determined if the death is suspicious. Fortune, a mother of four who had lived in Mississippi for over a decade, was last seen on July 26, traveling to Kentucky for a family reunion.

Her mother, Christy Spivey, told ABC News she believes her daughter did not take her own life. Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes has called for U.S. Attorney Baxter Kruger's assistance, referring to Fortune as a murder victim. No suspects or persons of interest have been identified, and police have not disclosed how the man arrested last week on a separate charge is connected to Fortune.

This death follows two other instances of hanging deaths in Mississippi in less than a year, raising concerns about how law enforcement handles investigations of Black residents in the state, a place with a history of civil rights struggles.
