Gov’t to revive stalled theatre project in Ashanti Region

The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has revealed plans to build a second National Theatre in Kumasi, Ghana, to bolster the region's cultural and creative infrastructure. However, Gomashie emphasized that the government's primary focus is to complete an existing theatre and Centre for National Culture project in the Ashanti Region before initiating construction on the new facility.

During a recent Accountability Series, Gomashie toured theatre and cultural facilities in the Ashanti Region and recommended to Cabinet that resources be directed towards finishing the already begun project rather than beginning construction on a completely new building. Cabinet approved this suggestion, enabling work on the existing facility to proceed.

Gomashie stated that the government will prioritize efficient resource utilization by completing the current infrastructure before allocating funds to new projects. Additionally, the Minister announced plans to renovate the existing National Theatre in Accra to enhance the facilities available for the creative arts industry. The proposed second National Theatre in Kumasi aims to expand access to major performing arts and cultural spaces, providing additional room for creative productions and cultural activities in the region.
