WCA welcomes formation of Sri Lanka players' body

The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has lauded the establishment of a players’ body in Sri Lanka, considering it a significant milestone for the growth and professionalism of the sport in the nation. On Saturday, the Sri Lankan Professional Cricketers’ Association was officially inaugurated, with white-ball captain Kusal Mendis assuming the role of its first president. The formation of this body coincides with a reform process within Sri Lanka Cricket, spearheaded by a government-appointed committee.

Tom Moffat, WCA’s Chief Executive, expressed his support for the development, stating that "a strong game and strong player representation go hand in hand." He emphasized that cricket flourishes when players have a genuine voice in shaping its future, and by uniting under a single voice, Sri Lankan players have shown a strong dedication to the game’s long-term health, integrity, and professional growth.

Kusal Mendis' leadership in the white-ball teams to the West Indies Women’s team, along with Chamari Athapaththu's endorsement, further strengthens the association's purpose. The newly formed body will empower players, particularly in negotiations with the cricket board regarding permission to participate in franchise cricket. This development marks a turning point, as players from 17 of the top 19 cricket-playing countries are now affiliated with the WCA, with India and Pakistan being the notable exceptions.
