Focus on what you can control, Zaheer Khan to Mohammed Shami

Former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan has advised his former teammate Mohammed Shami to concentrate on aspects he can control, rather than obsess over his status within the team management. With the 35-year-old continuing to deliver strong performances in domestic cricket, Zaheer believes Shami should persist in his efforts and stay prepared for a potential India return.

Shami last played for India during the 2025 Champions Trophy and has since been absent from the national side. Despite his impressive performances for Bengal in domestic cricket, he has yet to secure a place in the Indian team, a decision led by the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar. Zaheer believes that Shami should continue to do what falls within his control – participating in matches and performing well.

Zaheer stated, “It is your decision, the way you want to move forward. If you are playing matches and performing well, you remain available. The team’s thinking is different, but your way of thinking is important. If you want to contribute, it is your decision.” He further noted that while players might analyze their team’s plans and selection decisions, their primary focus should remain on contributing when the opportunity arises.

Zaheer acknowledged that injuries are an inherent part of professional sports and that players must manage what lies within their control. He said, “Injuries are part and parcel of the game. They are part and parcel of every individual’s journey. You can talk about workload management, but you also need to understand the timing of events. You have to plan accordingly.”
