UNC deputy commander stresses command's multilateral role in S. Korea's defense

SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Yonhap) -- The deputy commander of the U.S.-led United Nations Command (UNC) has emphasized the importance of the coalition's multilateral role in safeguarding South Korea amid escalating tensions with North Korea. Lt. Gen. Scott Winter, speaking at a press conference, underscored the significance of the UNC's commitment, dating back over seven decades, in deterring aggression and de-escalating crises.

Winter highlighted the diverse capabilities of the 18-member UNC, which comprises nations from various continents. This diverse representation brings a crucial deterrence factor, as well as the ability to manage crises and maintain multinational legitimacy in the event of a conflict. The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) exercise, set to commence next week, will enable the UNC to evaluate the effectiveness of its contributions in the current security landscape and future scenarios.

Winter stressed that the UNC's primary objective is to optimize the utilization of the 18 member states' capabilities to bolster the CFC (Combined Forces Command) in defensive situations. As the UNC is responsible for maintaining the armistice and supporting the CFC during contingencies, Winter emphasized the need to harness the collective strength of the coalition to address emerging challenges on the Korean Peninsula.

Although the UNC does not engage in field training, Winter highlighted the coalition's supporting role in communication, coordination, and crisis management. The UNC's contributions extend beyond traditional military assistance, as member states provide essential support in information, cyber, and space domains, helping to address evolving security threats.

Regarding recent tensions between North Korea and South Korea, Winter expressed confidence in the UNC's ability to investigate alleged violations of the armistice agreement. While acknowledging media speculation, Winter maintained that the UNC is diligently working to enforce the armistice through existing framework mechanisms. The UNC maintains that North Korea's fencing and land mine operations along the inter-Korean border are defensive measures, serving to separate the two nations.
