Ukrainian drone attack on oil hub deep inside Russia kills 13, official says

At least 13 people lost their lives in a Ukrainian drone strike that targeted the Russian republic of Tatarstan, officials have confirmed. The devastating attack left 75 others injured, marking one of the deadliest single incidents on Russian soil since Russia initiated its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The target city of Nizhnekamsk, situated over 1,100 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, was hit hard by the Ukrainian military.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces confirmed that Tanevo oil refinery suffered a direct hit during the attack, while FirePoint, a Ukrainian defence technology manufacturer, attributed the usage of their FP-1 drones to the assault. The drone strike persisted for several hours, spanning into the early morning hours. Eyewitnesses documented smoke and flames engulfing the city in daytime footage, accompanied by the ear-piercing wails of air raid sirens.

Earlier this month, on June 12, Nizhnekamsk had already endured a similar drone strike. Disturbing images circulating on social media revealed thick columns of smoke billowing into the sky alongside the ominous glow of flames, while the deafening sounds of air raid sirens added to the chaos. The Ukrainian leader, Andriy Kovalenko, has been intensifying his country's strikes on establishments believed to contribute to Russia's war efforts.

These targets are primarily industrial facilities that manufacture weapons and supply Russia with revenue and logistics. Ukraine's Centre for Countering Disinformation's head, Kovalenko, expressed his sorrow over the civilian casualties, stating that "every civilian death in Russia is on [President Vladimir] Putin" and urging Russians to direct their anger towards Putin and the decisions made within their own nation.

Meanwhile, Russia confirmed that the industrial facilities were targeted, but also admitted that civilian areas were hit as well. The Investigative Committee of Russia stated that "civilian individuals who were not involved in any military operations were present." Tatarstan's head, Rustam Minnikhanov, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased, emphasizing that the tragedy was a "tremendous pain for all of us."

A period of mourning had been declared in Tatarstan. Ukraine's Kovalenko attributed the mounting civilian casualties to Putin, insisting that "without Putin, there would have been no aggression. Without the aggression, these people would still be alive." In the same vein, Russia continues to launch large-scale aerial attacks, targeting cities and residential centers.

Last week, a combined drone and missile strike on Kyiv claimed the lives of 21 people, and in Kharkiv, near the frontline, five individuals were killed in a Russian artillery attack.
