Ukrainian drone attack kills at least 13 in central Russia

A Ukrainian drone assault on Nizhnekamsk, situated in a resourceful Tatarstan area in central Russia, resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals, according to a statement from the city's local news agency on Monday. Among the casualties were Central Asian residents and a young child, with 48 others suffering injuries. Over 1,000 kilometers away from the Russian-Ukrainian frontier, the locale hosts significant oil refineries that Kyiv has targeted in recent assaults as both nations ramp up long-range strikes on infrastructure.

The United Nations has observed an increase in civilian deaths in Russia and Ukraine due to such attacks. The exact targets, including unspecified industrial and civilian sites, were struck during Monday's operation, stated Nizhnekamsk's mayor Radmir Belyayev on Telegram. Russian authorities have commenced a criminal investigation into the incident, which they describe as a terrorist operation.

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed that Kyiv intentionally targeted civilians. Ukraine's military announced that they targeted the Taneco oil refinery overnight, reporting a recorded fire at the site. Ukraine's strikes on refineries have contributed to fuel shortages and diminished Russia's oil-refining capacity.

Russia has also frequently launched missiles, glide bombs, and drones at civilian regions in Ukraine, causing thousands of civilian casualties, as per the United Nations. On Monday, Kyiv reported that their special drone forces also attacked a Russian petrochemical facility in the Tyumen region. On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the campaign aims to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in negotiations for an end to the more than four-year-long full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"We will deliver entirely justifiable responses, and every Russian strike will be met with our response. Russia's war will be felt more and more at their own home — in Russia," Zelenskyy said in a social media post. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 126 drones during the overnight assault. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that they shot down 456 Ukrainian drones fired overnight, though they do not specify how many drones or missiles hit their targets or were intercepted in the Tatarstan region.

In northeastern Ukraine, a Russian artillery strike killed five people in a village in the Kharkiv region on August 10, according to Ukrainian officials.
