Ukrainian drone attack kills at least 12 in central Russia

A Ukrainian drone attack in Nizhnekamsk, a city in central Russia's energy-rich Tatarstan region, resulted in at least 13 deaths, according to a local press release. The assailants targeted several Central Asians and a child, while injuring 48 others. Despite being over 1,000 kilometers away from the Russian-Ukrainian border, the region encompasses significant oil refineries that Kyiv has been attacking in recent strikes.

The UN has noted that such attacks have led to a surge in civilian casualties in both Russia and Ukraine. The attack targeted unspecified industrial and civilian sites, as reported by Nizhnekamsk's mayor, Radmir Belyayev, on Telegram. Russian authorities claim they are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack, while the Russian Foreign Ministry accused Kyiv of intentionally targeting civilians.

Ukraine's military confirmed that they struck the Taneco oil refinery, with a fire reported at the site. The Ukrainian strikes on refineries have caused fuel shortages and reduced Russia's oil-refining capacity. Russia has a history of launching missiles, glide bombs, and drones at civilian areas in Ukraine, causing thousands of civilian casualties, as stated by the UN.

On Monday, Kyiv claimed their special drone forces also attacked a Russian petrochemical plant in Tyumen. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Russia to negotiate an end to the four-year conflict, stating that Russia would increasingly face the consequences of its actions. Ukrainian air forces reported Russia launched 126 drones during the overnight assault, while the Russian Defense Ministry claimed they shot down 456 Ukrainian drones overnight.

The ministry did not disclose the number of drones or missiles hitting their targets or being intercepted in the Tatarstan region. Additionally, a Russian artillery strike killed five people in the northeastern Kharkiv region village of Bugaivka on August 10.
