Two workers were temporarily stood down after near-miss collision at Sydney Airport

Two airport staff members have been suspended following a second near-miss incident at Sydney Airport within a two-week period, as reported by German Press Agency (dpa). The most recent close call occurred on August 9 when a Jetstar aircraft and a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 nearly collided while taxiing. The Jetstar pilot had to apply sudden brakes to prevent a collision.

An Airservices Australia spokesperson confirmed that one crew member sustained an injury, although no passengers were harmed. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has launched an investigation into the incident. ATSB Chief Angus Mitchell stated that while the collision occurred at low speed, it could have had serious consequences. Transport Minister Catherine King also questioned the head of Airservices Australia, Rob Sharp.

The suspensions come amid growing air traffic and a shortage of air-traffic controllers. This staffing shortage has led to operational constraints, such as reduced take-offs and landings, which have resulted in delays and frustration for passengers. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns cautioned that these issues could harm Sydney's reputation as a key business and tourism destination, but emphasized that safety remains the top priority.
