This approach came to light following a conversation with Axios on August 9, where Trump stated, "We are low-keying it." Although this stance marked a departure from his earlier threats to strike Iran "very hard," Trump exhibited no signs of frustration over Iran's sluggish progress in reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran's demand for the United States to first cease its blockade of Iranian ports and lift oil sanctions, as per a memorandum of understanding signed in June, further complicated ongoing negotiations. Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway, has led to soaring fuel prices and turmoil in the global economy, intensifying pressure on the Trump administration as the November midterm elections loom.

Trump expressed satisfaction with the current situation, stating, "We are only semi-negotiating with them. We are just watching Iran with its huge inflation and the fact they have no money." He also highlighted the positive impact of falling oil prices on American consumers, noting that they were experiencing less economic strain due to the conflict.

Trump likened the ongoing dealings with Tehran to a "chess game," suggesting that the administration's approach would ultimately prove successful.
