Telecel Ghana launches eco-SIM to advance environmental sustainability

Telecel Ghana has introduced the Eco-SIM, an eco-friendly alternative to traditional SIM cards, aimed at advancing environmental sustainability. The biodegradable SIM, composed of 90% less plastic, offers customers the same reliable voice, data, and digital experience, but with a significantly lower environmental impact. As the global connectivity industry produces around 3.7 billion physical SIMs annually, the need for more sustainable alternatives has become increasingly apparent.

In Ghana, with 43 million active mobile SIM users as of February 2026, there is a significant opportunity for the telecommunications industry to reduce plastic consumption and waste through sustainable options. Aneth Muga, Telecel Ghana's Director of Consumer Business, emphasized that the Eco-SIM is designed to reduce waste and promote climate action among customers.

Each Eco-SIM user contributes to decreasing plastic waste and promoting a greener environment. Although small, SIM cards and their packaging contribute to the problem of single-use plastics in landfills and waterways. By replacing conventional SIMs with biodegradable alternatives, Telecel Ghana makes it easier for customers to make environmentally responsible choices without altering their connectivity experience.

Komla Buami, Telecel Ghana's Director of External Affairs, highlighted that the Eco-SIM demonstrates that technology and sustainability can coexist for the greater good. The Eco-SIM rollout also bolsters Telecel Ghana's broader sustainability initiatives, including transitioning network exchanges into solar-powered connectivity hubs and planting over 40,000 trees for reforestation and ecosystem restoration.
