Telecel Ghana launches eco-SIM to advance environmental sustainability

Telecel Ghana has unveiled the Eco-SIM, a biodegradable SIM card aimed at boosting environmental sustainability. The new SIM card uses 90% less plastic than traditional SIMs, offering the same reliable voice, data, and digital services while significantly reducing its environmental impact. This launch aligns with a growing awareness of the environmental toll of physical SIM card production, with an estimated 3.7 billion SIM cards manufactured annually.

In Ghana, over 43 million SIM cards are active, providing a significant opportunity for the telecom industry to make strides in sustainability. Telecel Ghana's Director of Consumer Business, Aneth Muga, emphasized that the Eco-SIM is designed to help customers reduce plastic waste and promote a greener nation. By replacing the conventional SIM with a biodegradable alternative, Telecel Ghana is making eco-friendly choices accessible to customers without altering their connectivity experience.

Komla Buami, the Director of External Affairs, noted that the Eco-SIM demonstrates how technology and sustainability can coexist for the greater good. This initiative also bolsters Telecel Ghana's ongoing sustainability efforts, which include transitioning network exchanges to solar power and planting over 40,000 trees in Ghana's forest reserves.
