Technician drowns in River Thwake while returning to Nairobi

A 25-year-old man, Barnabas Lucky Baraza, tragically drowned in River Thwake on Sunday, August 9, 2026, while returning to Nairobi after finishing a Wi-Fi repair job in Masii. Baraza was a worker for Netwood Technologies and had been assigned to repair Wi-Fi services in the area. After completing the job, the team decided to head back to Nairobi.

Near River Thwake, Baraza asked the driver to pull over so he could use the restroom. As he took his time returning to the vehicle, his three colleagues left the car to search for him, discovering his clothes near the river. Despite their efforts to reach him using sticks, Baraza had already drowned. Divers recovered his body from the river, and the police processed the scene before transporting it to Kathiani Level Four Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Tragically, a 10-year-old girl also perished in a house fire on the same day. The fire started at around 10 pm at a home in Getumbi Village, Kithimu, Embu West Sub-County, when a gas cylinder exploded. The girl was trapped inside the burning house, sustaining severe burns that left her body unrecognizable. Her mother had briefly left the child alone to run a quick errand.

Upon returning, she found neighbors had already extinguished the flames but the girl was already trapped inside. Police arrived at the scene, documented the incident and transferred the remains to Embu Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination. The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding both incidents.
