Tamil Nadu Speaker joins Catholic anti-abortion rally — ‘Life begins at conception’

The Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, JCD Prabhakar, attended a Catholic anti-abortion rally in Chennai, India, on Sunday, and stated that "life begins at conception", highlighting the clash between religious beliefs and reproductive rights. Prabhakar, a 73-year-old ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA from Thousand Lights, was present at the fifth National March for Life organised by CHARIS India, under the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India.

Over 5,000 people attended the event which was held on August 10, the date when India's Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act was enacted in 1971. The rally marked a deliberate shift in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, a state where organized anti-abortion politics has historically had less prominence compared to countries like the United States.

Prabhakar's speech emphasized the sacredness of life from conception, arguing that every human life is a gift from God and that the value of a child does not diminish simply because it has not yet been born. He recounted his own experience of his wife resisting his request for an abortion, ultimately leading to her continuing the pregnancy.

Prabhakar argued that women facing difficult decisions needed support, compassion, and access to quality healthcare rather than judgment or condemnation. He stressed the importance of economic security, medical care, and protection of women's education in preventing the need for abortion.
