Security guard held for rape shot in leg while trying to flee in Ahmedabad

A security guard accused of raping a woman in Ahmedabad was injured while attempting to flee from police custody, officials reported on Monday (August 10, 2026). The incident occurred late Sunday (August 9, 2026), when the accused, Dharam Singh, allegedly tried to snatch the service pistol of an inspector during a recovery operation, leading to a scuffle.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 7) Shivam Verma stated that Singh was taken to the Hebatpur area to recover a stolen mobile phone after the rape incident. During the scuffle, Singh attempted to take the service pistol, resulting in a bullet being fired and injuring a police constable named Virendra Singh.

Singh was subsequently caught trying to overpower the accused, leading to another round of gunfire that injured him in the leg. Both the accused and the constable, Virendra Singh, were taken to the Civil Hospital in Sola for treatment and were reported to be stable. Singh had been arrested within hours of the rape incident on Sunday morning, and his medical examination and DNA sampling were completed, according to Verma.

The police were conducting a panchnama in the Hebatpur area to recover the stolen mobile phone at the time. Singh, a native of Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district, had been working as a security guard at the Anandnagar residential society for only four days prior to the incident. He allegedly strangled and sexually assaulted the woman on the terrace of a residential building in Anandnagar on Saturday night before fleeing the scene.
