Security guard accused of raping Ahmedabad student shot at in escape attempt, say police

On Monday at 1 am, Ahmedabad City Police shot and injured a man who had been arrested for allegedly raping a 23-year-old design student. The incident occurred on Sunday night when the accused, Dharam Singh Ramshankar Singh, was taken for the recovery of the woman's stolen mobile phone. Visuals from the hospital revealed police vehicles arriving at the GMERS Sola Civil Hospital's trauma ward, where the accused was lying with a gunshot wound on his right foot.

Zone-7 DCP Shivam Varma informed the media that Singh had been arrested after his medical tests and DNA samples were taken. During the recovery attempt, Singh allegedly tried to snatch the service revolver of a police officer, prompting a scuffle. Constable Virendrasinh was injured in the process, and an officer fired two shots at the accused, one of which hit him.

The accused and Constable Virendrasinh are in stable condition. An attempt to commit culpable homicide FIR will be filed against the accused at the Bodakdev police station. According to Joint Commissioner of Police Neeraj Badgujar, Singh had sneaked up on the woman while she was taking an after-dinner walk on the roof around 10.30 pm on Saturday.

He allegedly strangled her, causing her to collapse and subsequently rape her. After the incident, Singh allegedly escaped by bolting the terrace door from the outside. The woman raised an alarm, and police apprehended Singh near Hebatpur the following night. Singh, originally from Uttar Pradesh, had been working as a security guard in the apartment complex for only four days before the alleged rape.
