Rybakina, Gauff advance to Toronto quarter-finals

Elena Rybakina, currently ranked second in the world, advanced to the quarter-finals of the WTA Canadian Open on Sunday. In a two-hour and 49-minute match, Rybakina defeated fellow Russian Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Meanwhile, fourth-ranked Coco Gauff breezed through her quarter-final match, eliminating Russian teen qualifier Alina Korneeva 6-3, 6-1.

Gauff's victory marked her first appearance in the last eight of a Canadian Open since 2023. The American will face either Swiss 12th seed Belinda Bencic or in-form Filipina Alexandra Eala in the next round. Gauff, who has not dropped a set in Canada, showcased a strong performance with 16 winners and 15 unforced errors. Gauff's primary focus during the match was to secure the win, acknowledging that it was not the ideal mindset but expressing pride in her performance. Gauff won seven of the 12 break points she forced but lost all three of those against her.
