Police to file for inquest into deadly Durian Tunggal shooting this week

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 — The Malaysian police will soon request a formal inquest investigation into the fatal shooting that occurred in Durian Tunggal, Melaka on November 24, 2022. The application is anticipated to be submitted by Wednesday or Thursday this week. According to Bukit Aman CID director Datuk M. Kumar, the official inquest proceedings will take place in Melaka, though the specific date has not been announced.

Kumar elaborated that the process may be lengthy, as all pertinent individuals, including the police personnel involved in the incident, will be required to provide testimony. The officers in question are still on duty but have been reassigned to non-active roles.

On July 20, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) determined that an inquest should be conducted to investigate the incident. The AGC explained that the primary objective of the hearing is to ascertain the cause and circumstances leading to the three deaths, assess the evidence related to the case, and ascertain if any criminal involvement was present.

On November 24, 2022, three men aged between 24 and 29 were killed at an oil palm plantation in Durian Tunggal around 4am. The incident unfolded when one of the victims allegedly swung a machete at a police corporal in his early 30s, causing significant injury to his left arm.

On May 26, Director Kumar disclosed that the investigation paper was resubmitted to the AGC following compliance with additional directives requested by the prosecution.
