PKR congress to focus on reforms, economy and party strengthening, says veep Amirudin Shari

BANGI, Aug 10 — The upcoming 2026 PKR National Congress, set to take place this week, will place emphasis on reform initiatives, economic growth, and bolstering the party's strength, according to PKR Vice-President Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. The Selangor Menteri Besar highlighted that government stability and the party's future would also be taken into account during the decision-making process at the congress.

Amirudin Shari informed reporters after inaugurating the Human Ecology International Conference II (HEIC-II) 2026 that the party's proposed motions centered around politics, specifically addressing the advancement of the reform agenda, economic development, and strengthening the party. He added that the president's policy speech would also be discussed.

Amirudin Shari's response to PKR granting Nurul Izzah Anwar temporary leave from her duties as Deputy President did not impact the congress proceedings. He clarified that although the party may face certain consequences, PKR possesses a competent leadership team to manage the responsibilities and Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has been assigned to perform the duties of Deputy President.

In August 6, the PKR Central Leadership Council (MPP) decided to grant Nurul Izzah temporary leave from her role as Deputy President, beginning after the 2026 PKR National Congress and lasting indefinitely.

Amirudin Shari, who also serves as PKR's Election Director, revealed that speculation about Nurul Izzah's decision had been circulating among political players for some time. He stated that the speculation had been known to political players for a considerable period, and he had also heard about it. Shari noted that the timing was important, and respect for Nurul Izzah's personal constraints needed to be demonstrated.

The 2026 PKR National Congress will be held in Melaka at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC), Ayer Keroh, for four days starting this Thursday. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, also PKR President, is slated to inaugurate the congress on Saturday, August 15.
