Noctua tested more than 100 PC cases and found over half had inaccurate CPU cooler clearance specs

In an extensive study, PC hardware tester Noctua evaluated over 100 computer cases and discovered that more than half of them contained inaccurate CPU cooler clearance specifications. This issue is particularly concerning for small-form-factor and ITX builds, where every millimeter of clearance matters. Noctua's tests revealed significant discrepancies in 56 of the cases they examined, raising concerns about the reliability of manufacturers' stated specifications.

One notable example is the recently released NZXT H2 Flow. While the manufacturer claims up to 75mm of CPU cooler clearance, Noctua's measurements showed enough space for coolers up to 79mm tall. This discrepancy means that the Noctua NH-L12Sx77 cooler, which requires 77mm of clearance, can actually fit into the NZXT H2 Flow despite the presented specifications suggesting otherwise. Another case in point is the Thermaltake TR100, which specifies 68mm of clearance but can accommodate coolers up to 70.7mm in height.

The problem extends to other popular models as well. Corsair's 5000D, 4000D, and Frame 4000D cases all exhibit greater clearances than their listed values, with the 5000D offering up to an extra 1.7mm. Similarly, the Asus Prime AP201 and Lian Li B4-mATX cases have less clearance than their specifications indicate, potentially leading to fitment issues, fan clearance problems, or even preventing the case from closing completely.

In an effort to mitigate these issues for potential buyers, Noctua has incorporated a new custom field into its case compatibility database. When there is a deviation between the manufacturer's stated maximum CPU cooler height and Noctua's measurements, a small tooltip icon appears next to the specification. This feature serves as a helpful indicator for PC builders, potentially saving them from the frustration of purchasing a cooler that doesn't fit, or worse, one that's too large and causes other problems.

With over half of the cases tested showing inaccurate clearance specifications, this enhanced database could prove invaluable in avoiding future headaches for PC enthusiasts.
