Americans turn to hybrid cars as gasoline prices rise

Growing gasoline prices have led American consumers to turn to hybrid vehicles, as reported by various news outlets. Japanese automakers Toyota and Hyundai have experienced a substantial increase in hybrid car sales within the United States. According to recent data, hybrid car sales in the US surged nearly 20 percent in July, even as overall vehicle sales declined.

RBC Capital Markets data indicates a remarkable 62 percent jump in Hyundai's hybrid sales, reaching 43,727 units, while Toyota's hybrid sales saw a 22 percent increase. Honda recorded a 15 percent rise in hybrid sales. Together, these three Asian manufacturers now control 86 percent of the US hybrid market, with Ford holding the remaining share through its pickup truck models.

The Financial Times highlights that both Toyota and Hyundai offer fuel-efficient options in response to the rising gasoline prices, driven by tensions with Iran. Conventional hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius, combine a battery-powered electric motor with an internal combustion engine, providing better fuel economy without necessitating changes to driving or refueling habits.

Despite the increase in hybrid vehicle sales, plug-in hybrids have not gained significant traction among American consumers, making up only 2 percent of the market. In contrast, conventional hybrids remain an attractive choice amid high gasoline prices, offering savings without requiring adjustments to driving or refueling routines.

Although the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles was discontinued last year, data from Edmunds reveals that Tesla owners are increasingly trading in their EVs for hybrids, with a record 21 percent opting for hybrid models, particularly from Toyota.
