MEC warns that misused school funds amount to ‘theft of opportunity’ from children

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile has pledged to step up efforts against corruption within schools following demands for greater accountability from communities. During the province’s recent “It Takes a Village to Raise a Child” outreach programme, parents voiced their concerns over financial mismanagement in educational institutions.

Maile emphasized that corruption directly harms education by depriving learners of opportunities. He explained that every misappropriated rand diminishes chances for teaching, infrastructure, learner support and overall educational development. The MEC confirmed that investigations into alleged financial misconduct, including procurement irregularities, unauthorized expenditure, and abuse of school finances, are ongoing.

Disciplinary and criminal actions will be taken against those found guilty, as corruption is incompatible with quality education and effective governance. Maile underscored that public funds allocated to schools belong to the learners themselves, stating that misusing them amounts to the theft of opportunities from African children.

The province assured that these concerns about corruption will continue to shape governance reforms, oversight mechanisms, and investigations throughout the education sector.
