Kalonzo: I have no problem supporting Sifuna for president

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has expressed his willingness to support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in the 2027 Kenyan presidential election, provided other opposition leaders agree to back his candidature. Speaking in an interview on Monday, August 10, 2026, Kalonzo stated that Sifuna would have no issue supporting him if he becomes the opposition's flagbearer.

"I have no problem supporting Sifuna. Sifuna also has no problem supporting me. I have no problem supporting Gachagua," Kalonzo added. The former Vice President emphasized his primary goal of defeating President William Ruto, indicating that opposition leaders share a common objective of unseating the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Kalonzo also indicated his readiness to support other opposition principals, including Rigathi Gachagua, if they were collectively selected to lead the opposition in the 2027 presidential contest. The Wiper leader's remarks come as there is growing speculation that Kalonzo and Sifuna might form part of a joint opposition ticket to challenge Ruto, who is seeking a second term.

Sifuna has been intensifying his nationwide mobilization through the Linda Mwananchi movement, visiting various parts of the country to consolidate support and popularize the opposition cause. Kalonzo and Sifuna both maintain their presidential aspirations, aiming for another attempt at the presidency, a goal they have pursued for years.

However, opposition leaders have shown willingness to set aside individual ambitions and rally behind a single candidate if it increases their chances of defeating Ruto in 2027. Currently, opposition principals are focusing on strengthening their respective political bases before negotiating a possible coalition and agreeing on a joint candidate.

The developments coincide with opinion polls showing Ruto maintaining a lead over several opposition figures, including Kalonzo and Sifuna, who are seeking to challenge him.
