Jackie, the famous California bald eagle, dies after weeks of intensive care

Jackie, the famous California bald eagle and internet sensation, passed away on Monday after enduring weeks of intensive veterinary care. The Ojai Raptor Center, a wildlife rehabilitation organization, had been tending to Jackie following an attack by other eagles. Underlying health problems had left the bird anaemic and underweight.

Despite weeks of treatment and the combined efforts of the Ojai Raptor Center's veterinary team and consulting specialists, Jackie's condition continued to worsen, according to the Ojai Raptor Center's statement. A livestream of Jackie and her mate Shadow's nest in Big Bear Valley garnered hundreds of thousands of subscribers and Jackie was a frequent visitor to the nest site since she hatched in 2012.

Jackie and Shadow had been together since 2018, as reported by the Friends of Big Bear Valley website. The Ojai Raptor Center expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their cherished patient, acknowledging the privilege of caring for her and the worldwide attention her story had garnered. The Center pledged to collaborate closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to share more detailed information about Jackie's treatments and test results. Jackie's remains were subsequently transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
