Gov’t must prioritise essential services amid debt pressures – Veep Opoku-Agyemang

Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has defended the government's spending strategy, highlighting Ghana's substantial debt burdens necessitate tough decisions and careful allocation of limited resources. During an appearance on the KSM Show on August 7, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang clarified that meeting every public demand is impossible under the country's considerable debt.

She explained that while some obligations can be renegotiated, others must be settled, mandating government focus on initiatives that offer broad benefits to citizens. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang cautioned against spreading resources too thin in pursuit of political popularity, as this could weaken vital sectors like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

She stated the ultimate measure of government performance should be the tangible improvements citizens experience in their daily lives. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang cited improved roads, healthcare access, and measures easing the financial pressure on families supporting children in school as examples of interventions that could benefit all citizens, regardless of their political beliefs. "Ultimately, people want results. They want outcomes they can see and feel," she emphasized.
