GDE’s 2027 online school applications reach half a million

Gauteng’s education department has reported that online school applications for the 2027 academic year have reached a significant milestone, with over half a million applications submitted. This surge in interest has brought renewed attention to the challenge of ensuring adequate classroom space across the province.

He argued that this output-driven approach shifts the focus from the sheer number of applications received to the crucial metrics of how many learners have been successfully placed, how many remain outstanding, the reasons behind their outstanding status, and the interventions being applied to each unresolved category.
