Environmental Compliance Center introduces early warning system for violations

Saudi Arabia's National Center for Environmental Compliance has launched an early warning system to notify facilities of potential environmental violations. This proactive measure allows entities subject to environmental regulations to rectify their actions before facing penalties. By providing a designated time frame for compliance, the system aims to boost adherence to environmental standards and prevent financial repercussions.

Saad Al-Mutrafi, a spokesperson for the Center, highlighted that this early warning mechanism is intended to encourage voluntary compliance. Facilities are given the opportunity to resolve non-compliance issues prior to the imposition of punitive measures. The system targets the correction of specific violations, with each violation having a unique correction period and subsequent verification steps.

Factors such as violation severity, environmental impact, and any aggravating or mitigating circumstances are considered in this process. Facilities are informed of their obligations through a series of steps: receiving a warning, initiating a correction period, and demonstrating compliance. Only if a facility fails to meet these correction requirements within the stipulated timeframe and conditions will penalties be enforced.

The Center's Al-Mutrafi noted that the financial penalties will vary depending on the nature and gravity of the violation. He stressed that by utilizing the warning period to address issues, facilities can avoid penalties provided they comply with relevant environmental regulations governing their operations.
