Driver in childcare centre crash tests positive for drugs, not medical issue

A driver involved in a crash at a Kanchanaburi childcare centre tested positive for drugs, not a medical issue as initially claimed. The incident occurred on Friday, August 7, in the Kaeng Sian subdistrict while children were sleeping inside the facility. CCTV footage revealed the sedan driving at high speed, breaking through a fence and colliding with the building.

Fourteen children sustained injuries from concrete debris, with one two-year-old child reportedly suffering a head injury. The driver and a male passenger sustained injuries as well and were hospitalized for treatment. The driver had initially told investigators that a pre-existing medical condition caused him to faint while driving.

However, a subsequent drug test confirmed he tested positive, along with the passenger who admitted to using cannabis and heroin at the driver’s home before the crash. The driver's residence was near the childcare centre. He is currently hospitalized and expected to be discharged soon, after which police plan to take him to a police station for further legal proceedings.

The condition of the injured children has shown signs of improvement, with 11 already discharged and three remaining under medical care. A mother of an injured child expressed distress and suggested replacing the current iron fence with a stronger concrete wall to protect children better in future incidents.
