Bauer inks two-year contract extension with Jets

The Winnipeg Jets have secured a two-year contract extension for defenceman Tyrel Bauer, a move that could see him making his NHL debut sooner than anticipated. The 24-year-old, who was a restricted free agent this summer, will earn $875,000 if he remains with the Jets for the upcoming season and $250,000 if he plays in the American Hockey League with the Manitoba Moose.

The new deal transitions to a one-way contract for the 2027-28 season, ensuring Bauer receives NHL wages regardless of his playing location. Throughout his AHL career, Bauer accumulated 21 points (5 goals, 16 assists) and 401 penalty minutes in 214 games since being drafted in the sixth round in 2020. Standing at 6-4 and weighing 216 pounds, he is known for his physical play and has faced numerous opponents in his career.

The Jets currently face a void in physical presence on the back end, particularly with Elias Salomonsson recovering from shoulder surgery, potentially opening the door for Bauer to make an impact in training camp, which starts on September 14. Competition for Bauer’s roster spot will primarily come from Jack St. Ivany, acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier this summer in exchange for David Gustafsson.

Training camp kicks off the week of September 14, with the Jets set to commence their 84-game season on October 2 at Canada Life Centre.
