Bangladesh urges faster extradition of Hasina as Indian envoy meets PM Tarique

Bangladesh urged India to expedite the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and to foster better bilateral relations as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman met with Indian envoy Dinesh Trivedi in Dhaka. Hasina has been living in self-imposed exile in India since fleeing Bangladesh in August 2024, causing significant strain on the two nations' relations.

Trivedi, a political appointee, paid a courtesy call on Rahman at the Prime Minister's Office, discussing "important bilateral issues." The Bangladesh government stated their hope for India to hasten Hasina's extradition and create a more favorable environment for bilateral ties. Rahman emphasized the need to build a conducive atmosphere for improving relations and noted Hasina's conviction, implying that India allowed her to hold a virtual news conference in New Delhi on August 5, which was seen as undermining the judiciary.

The Bangladesh government has also requested the extradition of two Bangladeshi nationals arrested in India on suspicion of involvement in the murder of Bangladeshi politician Sharif Osman Hadi, who died in Singapore after being treated for his injuries. Rahman expressed hope that India would respond positively to the extradition request and the pending invitations for a bilateral visit and BRICS Summit attendance.

Trivedi, after his meeting with Rahman, stated that all issues between the two countries can be resolved through talks and that their shared democratic values and desire for good relations are natural.
