At least 20 dead after major earthquake hits Colombia

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, killing at least 111 people and causing devastation across several cities. The quake, which struck near San Jose del Palmar in Choco province, was felt nationwide, leading to at least 87 injuries and 61 buildings collapsing. President Abelardo De La Espriella declared a national emergency, prioritizing rescue efforts amid significant casualties and potential widespread damage.

The highest death toll was reported in Risaralda province, with 42 fatalities, while Pereira, the capital of another affected province, saw its cathedral tower toppled. Mayor Jorge Eduardo Rojas confirmed three deaths in Manizales. Cali, one of Colombia's largest cities, reported at least 30 buildings collapsed, with rescue crews working at ten of them.

Two survivors were pulled from collapsed buildings, and more remain trapped. Choco Governor Nubia Carolina Cordoba-Curi warned residents about aftershocks and advised caution. Colombia's civil aviation authority suspended flights at several airports for structural inspections. No tsunami threat was issued after the quake, which was felt in nine departments across the country. Aftershocks were reported, and the Colombian Geological Service warned of more potential tremors.
