Kyiv Oblast tightens gas station security after deadly Russian strikes

Kyiv Oblast has bolstered security measures at gas stations following deadly Russian strikes, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration. The announcement came via a Telegram post on August 10, where Tkachenko emphasized the necessity of enhancing safety for gas station personnel and customers amidst the ongoing conflict.

Representatives from the Armed Forces, National Police, State Emergency Service, and fuel market operators convened to deliberate on the issue during a meeting organized by Tkachenko.

Key discussions included the implementation of automated alert systems and specific response protocols for gas station staff in the event of air raid warnings. Additionally, the group tackled the pressing issue of abandoned vehicles obstructing evacuation routes, access to fire hydrants, and impeding emergency vehicle access at gas stations. These challenges are expected to be addressed at the forthcoming meeting of the Kyiv Oblast Defense Council.

Tkachenko also addressed the need for shelters at gas stations located far from existing protective facilities, promising intensified efforts in this area. Gas stations in Ukraine have become frequent targets of Russian attacks and disinformation campaigns, particularly noted since late July and early August. For instance, on August 4, Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation debunked an AI-generated video disseminated by Russian propaganda outlets, alleging a gas station destruction in Kremenchuk, Poltava Oblast.

More recently, on August 3, Russian forces targeted a gas station in Kryvyi Rih district, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, resulting in three fatalities and six injuries. As of August 3, Russian attacks had destroyed 37 gas stations within the Naftogaz Group network since the beginning of 2026.
