Aston Villa has reached an agreement with Atlético Madrid to sign defender Matteo Ruggeri for a reported fee of €20 million, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The Italian left-back has already approved the move, though contract negotiations are still ongoing. Reports from Diario AS suggest that Ruggeri did not accompany his previous team, Atlético Madrid, on their pre-season tour, further indicating that the transfer talks had progressed significantly.

Villa recognized the 24-year-old as a player who could bring a unique dimension to Unai Emery's defensive lineup. Even though Ruggeri joined Atlético from Atalanta last summer, the Spanish club has restructured their defense this transfer window, creating space for Villa to sign a player with considerable potential. Ruggeri made 21 appearances in La Liga during the 2025/26 season, earning three assists and contributing seven more across all competitions, according to ESPN.
