Watch European Championships: GB's Hunt and Asher-Smith in 100m semi-finals

Great Britain claimed three gold medals on the opening day of the European Aquatics Championships in Paris. Both the men's and women's 4x200m freestyle relay teams secured gold, while Max Litchfield took bronze in the men's 400m individual medley. The men's 4x200m relay team consisted of James Guy, Duncan Scott, Matt Richards, and Jack McMillan from Belfast.

They set a new record time of seven minutes 1.52 seconds, edging out France in second place and Germany in third place. For the women's 4x200m relay, Freya Anderson, Leah Schlosshan, Abbie Wood, and Freya Colbert secured victory with a time of 7:45.93. Hungary placed second, and Neutral Athletes B rounded out the podium with bronze.

Litchfield finished third in the men's 400m individual medley, while Ilya Borodin of Russia claimed gold with a championship record time of 4:08.17. Italy's Alberto Razzetti secured second place in 4:10.40. Jack Kelly of the United States previously held the Irish 100m breaststroke record at 59.27. He broke his own record in the semi-finals with a time of 58.90 and finished second in the final behind Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi, who holds the 2024 Olympic champion title.

Kelly expressed his excitement about breaking the record and his eagerness to see what he can achieve next. The atmosphere at the event was described as exciting and supportive, with Kelly praising his teammates for their camaraderie. The next 100m breaststroke final is scheduled for Tuesday at 17:48 BST. Meanwhile, Belfast's Lottie Cullen, representing Ireland, did not secure a spot in the 200m backstroke final, finishing sixth in her semi-final with a time of 2:12.22.
