Apple reveals how Siri AI features work in China – raising privacy questions

Apple has unveiled plans to equip its Siri AI with new features through a partnership with Alibaba's Qwen models in China. Unlike other countries, where Google's Gemini models power Siri AI, this arrangement is necessary due to the Chinese government's requirement. This move raises concerns regarding privacy, as Google's Gemini models, which run on Apple's Private Cloud Compute (PCC) servers or Google-provided servers, ensure user interactions are protected with stringent privacy measures.

However, in China, the law only allows for the use of Chinese AI models, potentially enabling government surveillance of user interactions. Apple's guide indicates that users in China can opt to use Qwen through Siri for more detailed responses, including the analysis of photos and documents, and even generate text or images via Writing Tools.

A noteworthy fact is that Mac users must create a Qwen account and sign in to utilize the service, implying that privacy protections may not be as robust as those in other regions.
