NRS Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, lists four economic distortions inherited by Tinubu

Zacch Adedeji, Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), has identified four major economic issues inherited by President Bola Tinubu's administration. These problems include an unsustainable fuel subsidy, a murky foreign exchange market, a struggling oil industry, and a limited tax base. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Adedeji defended his earlier statements against those criticizing the current administration, stating that Nigeria's fiscal situation is improving.

Adedeji pointed out that the inherited conditions from the previous administration had led to a trade deficit, negative Foreign Exchange Account of the Central Bank of Nigeria (FAAC) inflows, and a staggering increase in ways and means, totaling around N23 trillion. He emphasized that the Tinubu administration must tackle these four interconnected distortions affecting the nation's economy.

Adedeji firmly believed that the country's fiscal condition, or balance sheet, is getting better and would result in enhanced living standards for Nigerians.

He also mentioned that without the economic reforms initiated by President Tinubu, Nigeria's fuel subsidy expenditure could have soared to N53 trillion, considering the situation in Iran and global economic developments. Furthermore, Adedeji projected that if the reforms had not been implemented, the naira might have plummeted to approximately N3,500 per dollar.

President Tinubu's decision to remove the subsidy, Adedeji argued, should be praised as a patriotic move, demonstrating the administration's commitment to addressing these economic issues.
